Sleepy Hollow Cinema Launches Capital Campaign Following 501(c)(3) Approval
SLEEPY HOLLOW, NY — Sleepy Hollow Cinema (SHC) today announced it has received 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and is launching its “Light the Lantern” capital campaign to build a permanent movie theater on Beekman Avenue.
The campaign aims to raise $200,000 by August 1 to secure a lease and begin architectural design for a new cinema in the former Strand Theater building. The full project is expected to require approximately $950,000 in capital investment.
“For less than the cost of many homes in our village, we can build a permanent home for film right on Beekman Avenue—something this community hasn’t had in decades,” said Marc Solomon, Founder of SHC. “Now that our nonprofit status is in place, we’re ready to move forward.”
Early Momentum
Before receiving nonprofit status, SHC raised nearly $20,000 through an early partnership with Friends of Tarrytown Parks and Recreation. With 501(c)(3) approval, the organization can now accept tax-deductible donations directly.
Two early supporters have already pledged a combined $50,000 toward the campaign.
“This is a rare chance to be part of something historic from the very beginning — we’re moving fast, and we want passionate people at the table,” said Lauren Perrotta Camia, Director of Major Gifts.
A Theater for the Rivertowns
Sleepy Hollow Cinema plans to anchor the ground floor of the Strand Theater redevelopment on Beekman Avenue with a single-screen, approximately 100–120 seat cinema.
The theater will offer a mix of family films, classics, Spanish-language programming, and a signature focus on horror. It would be the only cinema within walking distance of both Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown.
Organizers say the project is designed to serve as both a cultural destination and a driver of foot traffic for local businesses.
“Business owners we’ve spoken with are excited about what a year-round cinema could mean for Beekman Avenue,” said Solomon. “This is the kind of project that brings consistent activity to the corridor, not just seasonal traffic.”

SHC is inviting supporters to become Founding Donors, with recognition opportunities inside the theater.
