Sleepy Hollow Cinema Ushers in a New Era of Entertainment for Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow Cinema is a new, community-based nonprofit organization made up of area cinephiles with one shared goal: creating vibrant gathering places for our community to experience the power and art of film.

Launched in response to overwhelming public enthusiasm for a walkable theater dedicated to film, Sleepy Hollow Cinema is dedicated to bringing a wide range of motion pictures to our Villages. We will showcase family friendly classics, Spanish language films, provocative avant garde releases, and of course, horror movies. Sleepy Hollow Cinema proudly embraces our unique local identity and plans to become a national Home for Horror, with Halloween-themed programming in the fall months to frighten residents and tourists alike.

“We’re building a community theater for everyone to enjoy—but it will also be a home for horror to welcome visitors in town for something spooky," says Marc Solomon, chair of SHC. “This will be a place for teens after school, date night rom-coms with drinks on main street, and regular screenings of classics from Psycho to Scream.”

Sleepy Hollow Cinema is actively working to secure a permanent home. But in the meantime, it looks forward to showing films in temporary and pop-up locations across our community.

After preliminary discussions in May, Sleepy Hollow Cinema has hit the ground running. Here’s a quick update on where things stand, and what we’re working on:

  1. We’ve assembled a nine-person board of committed area residents who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience in event planning, real estate, film programming and community organizing.

  2. We have built a website, designed a logo and launched our fundraising efforts.

  3. We are incorporated as a non-profit in NY state and actively pursuing federal 501(c)3 status

  4. We have an agreement in principle with the Friends of Tarrytown Parks and Recreation to act as our fiscal sponsor, enabling us to accept tax-deductible donations while we await 501(c)3 status.

  5. We have identified potential locations for a permanent theater and have begun discussions with property owners.
